No understudies in main roles, but Carlos Salazar and Morgan Matayoshi were on in ensemble tracks. And spoilers? I figure most if not all of you know what happens by now, but... just in case!

I saw the show with three of my friends thanks to the be In the Heights contest and two of us ended up in row D on the end and the other two were in row G smack in the middle. They were perfect seats. It was surreal being that close to the stage.

Everyone in the cast was fantastic. I could honestly rave on and on about them forever. Kyle Beltran is so freaking adorable as Usnavi. One of my friends made the comment about him being a better dancer than Lin, so she was worried he wouldn't pull off awkward!Usnavi as well, but he did wonderfully. He really played off the fact that he's tall and lanky and that worked so well. He got so choked up during Alabanza that he couldn't sing at one point. It was such a realistic scene overall, but Kyle nailed it so well.

Arielle Jacobs and Sabrina Sloan both blew the roof off the theatre, not gonna lie. Those girls can sing like nobody's business. At first I was a little iffy on Sabrina because I feel like they tried to make her look too ghetto, but as soon as she started singing I forgot all about that. Rogelio Douglas Jr was fantastic as well and he made Benny such a wonderful character. You can't help but love him. And David Baida made a fantastic Piragua Guy. He's got a great voice and his dance moves are so funny! Great comedic timing too. I could go on and on forever about how much I loved everyone, but I'll stop now before this turns into a novel.

One thing that I really liked about this performance was how they handled the "It really said US Navy" line. Abuela sets it up really nicely, and you can tell that she really thinks she's reminding Usnavi of a wonderful memory. When he explains that the boat really said US Navy, she looks at him, shocked, for a second, then you can see her thinking about it, probably spelling it out in her head, then her hand flew to her mouth. I really liked how they played that out, because it's really believable that Abuela didn't know until that moment.

All in all, amazing performance by everyone. I can't wait to go back!!

Oh, fun fact. Seth Stewart understudies Usnavi (at least it says so in my program) and I am very intrigued. I love Kyle Beltran, but I have never wanted to see an understudy more than I do right now.

^^Thanks!! I got to see it twice total, which, all things considered, is FANTASTIC. Such a good show, even better the second time. Everyone was on fire tonight, and Kyle got even more choked up during Alabanza. And picture of me, Kyle, and puppetsnavi:

He only took it off to sign more programs, then it went right back on his free hand and he was playing with it as he walked down the street!

That's so adorable.
Like, I can't express to you how adorable I think that is.

I was going to make Benny, but his hair really started to annoy me (no joke, I NEVER want to braid yarn EVER again.) and I didn't finish him. But I will at some point. I also decided that I want to make myself a puppet cast of In the Heights, so we'll see how that goes. Razz

And Rachel, they did like the pants! They all thought it was very different and Daniel Bolero's double take when he realized just what I was holding was amazing. Oh! And Natalie Toro was so funny at the stagedoor, she comes out and walks over to all of us, saying, "Hello everyone. I played 'Mother,' I know it's hard to tell, the wig's very elaborate." LOVE HER.

On that note, Natalie Toro as Camila = AWESOME. She nailed the role, singing, acting, and comedic timing-wise. She was probably one of my favorite actors in the entire cast. 'Enough' was so powerful both nights. I seriously wanted to yell and scream and give her a standing ovation afterwards. But I was a polite theatre goer and just clapped enthusiastically in my seat. Razz
